The Overview Effect, Astronomy, and Spaceship Earth

A presentation by Astronomy for Equity‘s founder, Mike Simmons, at the 3rd Shaw-IAU Workshop on Astronomy for Education, organized by the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE, http//astro4edu.org) as part of a session called Earth as a Planet.

The presentation describes the reasons for new programs (coming soon) based on astronomy as the Overview Effect, and how we can use it.

“We astronomers have a unique perspective, a cosmic perspective. Aside from the few people who have seen Earth from space, we are the only ones who truly understand that we are in space orbiting the center of mass of our galaxy. I believe that we have a responsibility to share that perspective with others for the sake of all humanity. Astronomy truly is the Overview Effect for the rest of us.”
